“You have to say that the team was magnificent in the first half, both in terms of the play and chances created. One incident made us a bit nervous and we stopped playing a bit. In the second half, we did very well not to give up many chances against a team with significant quality while also looking to kill the game, I’m thinking about that late chance for Gervinho. If I analyse the entire match, I have to applaud these guys. They deserved the win for the way they played and the chances created.”
“Today, we were facing a team that was built to compete for something other than survival and they were ahead of us in the able. We had to be humble but you can always be ambitious in lifeand we knew that we’d go ahead of them with a win even if we have different objectives. Now, we’re getting closer to our goal and this not just thanks to what the guys do in matches but on the training ground also. The past two weeks, they worked really intensely and it’s a real satisfaction for a coach to see the effort applied in our daily work. That’s the most important thing and it often leads to results in games. “Have I got less of a catenaccio-based approach? Sometimes, even those who know what they’re talking about downplay what these guys are doing. Wherever I go, I receive compliments, here people nit-pick. I don’t think that you can say anything to this group with how they’re working. I can’t see how Parma are spoken about as a side that plays catenaccio when we controlled the game for 40 minutes in Torino and did the same today. Every Coach needs to make the most of his players’ characters to bring home results, I like to train on the pitch and not from the side to make the product more attractive. But it does annoy me at times what we’ve done has not been recognised, you can’t speak about catenaccio and Parma after a first half like that. A Coach has to work with what they’ve got and a win is always thanks to the guys, there aren’t any good coaches without players. The quality from Inglese and some players is vital, to have a full squad also means that we can have more intense sessions during the week. Let’s not forget about the injuries. When we were struggling, we never made excuses and full credit to these guys for what they’re doing after the difficulties we had. Gagliolo has done brilliantly as a centre-back but I’m forced to play him on the left because we lack players there. “The high pressing? The more time you give Sassuolo to move the ball, the more chances they’ll create and they can tire you out and risk opening you up as happened in the second half. Against a side that is technically good, you look to stop them from playing from the start and the guys did this very well. The fact that we’re in better shape also meant that we could do it for longer and from the start. Again today, we had to deal with the fact that Scozzarellacouldn’t play the full game. Grassi had an issue and unfortunately in a lot of situations you can’t make certain tactical decisions. “Compared to Stulac, I think that Scozzarella is better at getting the ball forward quickly but that doesn’t mean that the Slovenian hasn’t done well so far. Every player has their own, different characteristics. Stulac offers more in defence, he’s one of the players who runs the most in the league and he plays a role where it’s important to have quality and quantity. In this match, I went for Matteo because you could see there were different opportuntites on the ball. The Bastonichange? He had some issues with cramp so I brought him off. “The referee? It’s right that he evaluates things in the same way for both teams. There was just on situation where I became agitated. It was when they were looking at VAR because there was a meeting on Monday where they said not to protest because it doesn’t change anything, then I saw some players in front of the screen where the referee has to look and it agitated me but there’s no need for controversy. After, I cleared it up with Magnanelli and Boateng. Mistakes can happen, inconsistency is what’s annoying. I say that with no intention to create any controversy because the referee does a very difficult job. The guys did well to keep playing, if there’s a refereeing mistake it can be offset by other mistakes, what had to focus on the game to bring home the result. “The team is become more and more away of its own ability. That’s on a mental level because the win at Torino gave us confidence, but also on a physical level because being in better shape makes you more consistent over the course of a game.”
